Finland’s first refueling station for hydrogen buses will be built in Jyväskylä

Finland’s first large-capacity hydrogen refueling station will be built in Jyväskylä.

The Jyväskylä hydrogen station primarily serves heavy-duty vehicles, such as trucks and buses. In addition, the station is suitable for the needs of, for example, taxis and vans, as long as they are hydrogen-powered.

Five hydrogen buses

Responsible for construction work Norwegian Hydrogen AS. One of the main goals of the project is to promote the use of green hydrogen as a clean energy source.

The Norwegian company builds and maintains a large green hydrogen production and distribution network in the Nordic countries. The opening of the hydrogen filling station also enables the piloting of Finland’s first green hydrogen-powered buses in Jyväskylä.

During 2025, five buses running on green hydrogen will appear in the city’s public transport, supported by a new hydrogen filling station. The project tests, among other things, the performance of green hydrogen buses in northern conditions and promotes sustainable urban transport.

The first of four positions

The production of Caetano H2 City Gold buses will start in January 2025. The hydrogen buses will be put into trial use by July of the same year.

It is possible to connect the buses to the city’s public transport during 2025.

“This project supports Jyväskylä’s transition to sustainable solutions and promotes a cleaner, healthier urban environment and a stronger local economy”, Cefmofin executive director Haruka Arai says.

The station to be built in Jyväskylä is the first of four strategically located stations, the realization of which is made possible by the cooperation project of the Central Finland Mobility Foundation (Cefmof) and the city of Jyväskylä.

Due to its location, Jyväskylä offers a central hub for the hydrogen infrastructure under construction.

Currently, there are no other operating hydrogen filling stations in Finland.
