State museums offer a contemporary rereading of their textile collections in ‘Memory, Fabrics and Museums’

The Ministry of Culture has presented this Wednesday ‘Memory, fabrics and museums. The low neighborhoods of attention‘, a project that raises a rereading of the textile collections of five state museums, in charge of different contemporary creators.

The initiative participates in the suit museum. Ethnological Heritage Research Center, the National Museum of Romanticism, the National Museum of Decorative Arts, the Museum of America and the National Archaeological Museum.

The commissioners Selina Blasco and Patricia Molins They have chosen different artists to propose in a special way for each museum a rereading of their textile collections. Thus, Narelle Jubelin, Ana Garriga and Carmen Urbita (the daughters of Felipe), Patricia Esquivias, Eva Lootz and Teresa Lanceta are responsible for offering visitors with their interventions a reflection on the textile, raising creative, technical, perceptual, perceptual issues, Expositive, anthropological, authorship or gender.

All of them are artists who have been interested in the textile from different perspectives, in their materiality, their symbolic or anthropological capacity, or as a creative means. The project of this exhibition is inaugurated with Narelle Jubelin in the suit museum and its sample ‘tailor’s drawer, etc.’, which can be enjoyed by the public until May 2025.

‘Sastre drawer, etc.’ Take as a starting point the architecture, collections and furniture of the suit museum, to make visible the textile through museum elements and the conservation materials of the pieces, as well as their own embroidered pieces. Jubelin has created for the occasion a constellation of objects and images, with formal and visual relationships, following the history of the museum and the memory of his workers.

The center of this proposal is a tubular pedestal table that was part of the building’s furniture when the Spanish Museum of Contemporary Art housed in the 70s and 80s. On it, the Restorer Práxedes García has added a cotton skirt that gives the furniture of a warm lining, canceling its structural nakedness.

The project will continue in different state museums during 2025 and 2026. The National Museum of Romanticism will host Ana Garriga and Carmen Urbita (the daughters of Felipe) from May to September 2025; the National Museum of Decorative Arts to Patricia Esquivias from October 2025 to February 2026; the National Archaeological Museum to Teresa Lanceta from February to May 2026; and the Museum of America to Eva Lootz in June and until November 2026.
