132 people were killed in a police operation in Rio de Janeiro

At least 132 people were killed in a police operation in Rio de Janeiro yesterday, including four police officers, state authorities said.

Reuters notes that it was the deadliest police operation against a major gang in the city’s history.

The police action took place ahead of the global events related to the UN Climate Summit (COP30) in Rio.

Police have often carried out large-scale operations against criminal gangs ahead of major events in Rio, which hosted the 2016 Olympics and the 2024 G20 summit.
