The organizers imagined success but not to this extent: in 23 minutes, everything was gone. For 32 years, the organizers of the Tour de France have opened a stage to amateurs, a few days before the professional peloton passes. Each year, nearly 15,000 cyclists take part in the event. And every year, the demand grows.
For 2026, the stage will be invigorating. A real plate of hills since the Etape du Tour for amateurs will take place on Sunday July 19, starting from Bourg d’Oisans and with the unprecedented climb to the Col de Sarenne to reach Alpe-d’Huez. This will be the exact route of the 20th stage of the Grande Boucle, which will take place on Saturday July 25, six days later.
The stage will be extremely difficult since 5,600 m of altitude will have to be climbed all day. On social networks, many people were upset about the prices considered too high. Bibs were on sale from 175 euros. Prices went up to 270 euros with, in addition, equipment donated by the organization.
“For this price, there is first of all the security of the event with closed roads,” recalls Thomas Delpeuch, director of general public events at ASO. We also have supplies, broom vans for those who give up, but also souvenirs upon arrival. »
But these prices have not cooled anyone. A bit like these big concerts in the stadiums of superstars, many of whom criticize the price of the tickets but which then sell out in a few minutes. Often by those who complained about the prices elsewhere.
The ticket office, opened this Monday, was declared “sold out” in less than an hour. So causing the game, the frustration of all those who were unable to reserve a bib. Many disappointed people already imagine that a black market will be organized. “It’s impossible,” denies Thomas Delpeuch. The bibs are nominative and there is no transfer of registration. »
There is still a possibility but it is much more expensive. Take an “associative bib” after a donation of 850 euros, made alone or in groups in favor of the Mécénat Chirurgie Cardiaque Association, a partner of the Tour de France for 20 years. To do this, you must open an online collection page. “This year, thanks to the Coureurs du Cœur, 40 children with heart defects will be able to undergo surgery,” indicate the organizers of the Tour stage, who point out that 75% of the donation is deductible from one’s income tax return.
Note that in addition to this stage, ASO also organizes another race open to amateurs on the Tour de France women’s route. With only 24 hours ahead of the professionals, the start will be given in Vaison-la-Romaine, on August 6 in Vaucluse. The route is 120 km long with nearly 3,000 m of elevation gain. It will end with the legendary ascent of Mont Ventoux by Bédoin. A climb of 21 km at 7.3%. And there are still places on sale.
