ChatGPT launches group chats and becomes more and more social

OpenAI is introducing a new feature group chat on ChatGPT, opening a testing phase in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and Taiwan. The novelty allows multiple users to collaborate within the same conversation together with the AI assistant. The feature is available for Free, Plus and Team users on both mobile and web. According to OpenAI, the goal of the pilot is to understand how people use ChatGPT in collaborative contexts, before rolling out to more regions and plans. Unlike one-on-one conversations, group chats are separate spaces and accessible only by invitation. The user’s personal memory is not shared and is not used during group conversations.

Users can also leave the group at any time and, with the exception of the creator, participants can remove other members. For those under 18 years of age there is an additional content filter and dedicated parental controls. Starting a group chat is immediate: just tap the icon with the people and add the other participants, even via a shareable link. Each group can include 1 to 20 users. If you add someone to an existing chat, a new group conversation is automatically created to keep the previous history separate.

Within group chats, ChatGPT works as in standard interactions, but has been trained in new social behaviors, with the ability to intervene only when appropriate. “We want to understand how people use ChatGPT together, and learning from early adopters will help us expand the feature responsibly,” it said in a statement. The assistant can also react with emojis and use profile photos to generate personalized images.

Responses are handled by the GPT-5.1 model and include functions such as search, file upload, image generation, and dictation. Usage limits apply only when the AI responds, not to messages exchanged between users. The move represents a new step in ChatGPT’s transformation into a shared interaction space, following the fall launch of Sora 2, the TikTok-style feed app for sharing AI-generated videos. “We are working to make ChatGPT a space where people can create, decide and collaborate together.” Last colorful note: the presentation on the blog was made by hypothesizing a multiple chat that has Italy, Rome and pasta as its theme.
