OpenAI tests group chats on ChatGPT

OpenAI has started testing a new group chat experience in your artificial intelligence (AI) assistant app ChatGPT so that friends, family or co-workers can interact in the same conversation to research or plan tasks.

Until now, users’ relationship with ChatGPT has been one-way, with conversations in which only the person and the assistant themselves participated. However, the company led by Sam Altman intends to go further and offer shared experiences on ChatGPT, uniting several people and their assistant in the same conversation facilitate collaboration when carrying out any type of task.

In this sense, OpenAI has begun to test the group chats in your ChatGPT appboth for mobile and webso that several people, whether family, friends or colleagues, will be able to interact in the same shared space with the AI assistant.

For the moment, it is a pilot test which has been launched for ChatGPT users with the free plans, Go, Plus and Pro, in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and Taiwan, although the idea is to expand this service to more regions and assistant plans, as the company has detailed in a statement on its blog.

Therefore, with group chats, users will be able to participate in the same conversation with ChatGPT either to plan group eventshow to take decisions o develop ideas on the whole. For example, these conversations allow you to use AI to organize the itinerary of a weekend trip, compare destinations or create a packing list with the participation and monitoring of all members.

Likewise, OpenAI has also exemplified how these group chats can be used for other types of projects such as design a flat together, prepare an outline or research for a job or share notes and questions to organize study information.

To start a group chat, all you have to do is Tap the people icon in the top corner right of the chat and add the users who will make up the group. Likewise, when you add someone to an existing chat, you create a copy of the conversation to keep the original chat separate.

Users can also invite other people to join the group chat using the sending a linkwhich can be shared with up to 20 personasand anyone in the group can share the link with other users. Thus, in order to identify each member, each one must set up a profile with your name, username and a photo.

Likewise, the company has detailed that users must accept the invitation to join the group chat and leave the conversation whenever they want. They can also remove other membersexcept for the group creator.

Following this line, it must be taken into account that if there are users minors 18 years old ChatGPT will automatically reduce exposure to sensitive content for all participants.

All in all, group chats will be grouped in a new section located in the sidebar of the application. Thus, it must be taken into account that these conversations are independent of private chats and, therefore, the ChatGPT personal history not shared with any other user in these group conversations.

OpenAI has also specified that the assistant’s responses are will be generated with the recently presented GPT-5.1 modelwhich has been trained with social behaviors for group chats. That is, it is capable of follow the flow of the conversationdeciding when to respond and when to remain silent depending on the context. Additionally, you can also react to messages with ’emojis’ and use members’ profile photos for reference.

At the moment, this is a test, so the company has detailed that they will continue to improve the group chats function as they receive feedback from users.
