A conference in Bochum attempts to clarify the future of classical music

It’s a tricky thing with classical music: you might think that you don’t have to worry about it. The concert halls are full again, occupancy figures are at pre-Corona levels or even higher. Nevertheless, the Federal Cultural Foundation has now organized a three-day, international “Ideas Festival for the Future of Classical Music”, a conference that addressed questions like these: What do contemporary concert programs sound like? How can institutions and ensembles be made future-proof? Classical concertgoers might now shrug their shoulders and say: Contemporary concert programs sound at best like they did a hundred or two hundred years ago, and that means the institutions are already positioned for the future.
