Europe must become a technological superpower in order to secure its future prosperity and security. This is the line of the former prime ministers Sanna Marin, Tony Blair and Matteo Renzi In the report Europe in the Age of AI published today by the Tony Blair Institute (TBI).
According to the report, Europe risks being left behind in a world where technological leadership determines economic competitiveness and security.
“Without this, we will be left behind,” the three former prime ministers write in their joint foreword.
Marin also gave her own statement about the report.
“European citizens want a future with prosperity, security and opportunity. To make it happen, our leaders must make technological competitiveness a main political goal,” says Marin in TBI’s press release.
No copying USA or China
According to the report, Europe should ensure that at least ten percent of the world’s computing capacity is located in Europe, so that the continent has sufficient resources for the development and use of artificial intelligence.
In addition, according to them, the introduction of artificial intelligence must be accelerated in key sectors, such as healthcare, education and the manufacturing industry, in order to maintain competitiveness and make services more efficient.
The report also calls for the launch of a large continental energy project, which would include the construction of new nuclear power plants and the acceleration of permit processes for renewable energy, power grids and storage solutions.
The prime ministers emphasize that it is not about copying the United States or China, but about utilizing Europe’s strengths. Technological leadership is seen as essential to safeguard Europe’s way of life, prosperity and security.
“Europe has the ability to respond to this moment. It has the know-how and resources, but they must be put to use and supported effectively,” the prime ministers state.
