It was November 20, 1925 when Robert Francis Kennedy was born in Brookline, Massachusetts. Exactly one hundred years since birth of a man who marked history with his words and actions in favor of the young and the weakest. Because of his message which is still so relevant today, in a world often dominated by inequalities, Robert F. Kennedy is an iconic figure who inspires young people and others all over the world.
For this reason, the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy has decided to celebrate Robert Francis Kennedy with a stamp that will be marketed and distributed by Poste Italiane. A recognition of the US political leader’s commitment to social justice and the equal civil rights. The stamp depicts Robert F. Kennedy in the foreground (image taken from a photo donated by Harry Benson) and belongs to the thematic series “social values”. It is printed by the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato in rotogravure, on white, neutral coated paper, self-adhesive with optical brightener and the print run is 225,000 copies. It is the first time that an Italian stamp has been dedicated to an American public figure.
Kerry Kennedy, Honorary President of RFK Italiacommented: “I am grateful to the Italian government and Italians for creating this beautiful stamp, dedicated to my father Robert F. Kennedy. An important gesture to commemorate his 100th birthday, as well as a fantastic way to celebrate the ties between our two countries and the love of democracy. There is no more important time than now to embrace democracy and the vision of Robert F. Kennedy.”
Stefano Lucchini, President of RFK Italia, declared: “Lissue of a commemorative stamp dedicated to Robert Francis Kennedy, on the centenary of his birth, is a gesture that goes far beyond philately. It is a symbolic act, a recognition that Italy chooses to give to a figure who represented, and still represents today, the hope, courage and commitment to a more just society. The values for which Robert Kennedy lived, and for which he lost his life, still remain fundamental today: justice, equity, human rights, fight against discrimination, are principles that are never acquired forever, but which require daily commitment”.
