Almost a year after the first announcement, Instagram finally delivered one of the most requested features – the ability to reorganize the network of posts on the user’s profile. Although the option was available to select users within the test groups, from June 8, 2026 it was rolled out globally via mobile apps for Android and iPhone, bringing a new level of creative control to users around the world.
Until now, the posts on the Instagram profile were fixed in strict chronological order, with the exception of the possibility of “pinning” up to three posts at the very top. With the introduction of the new feature, users can now freely rearrange their photos and videos, regardless of how old they are, giving them complete freedom in creating the visual identity of their profile.
How the new option works
The new feature, known as “Reorder Grid” or “Edit Grid”, is extremely easy to use. To reorganize their posts, users need to long press any photo or video on their profile. After that, a menu with the option to edit the network will appear. By selecting this option, all announcements become movable and can be placed in the desired location by simple drag-and-drop.
It is important to emphasize that this change does not affect the existing publication data. The original publication date, the number of likes and all comments remain unchanged, the authenticity and history of each individual publication is preserved. The only posts that cannot be moved freely are those that are “pinned” to the top of the profile; they will retain their prominent position.
A long way to creative freedom
The road to this feature was long and marked by the anticipation of users. The first hints about the introduction of this possibility appeared as early as 2022, when technology analysts noticed the internal testing of an option called “edit grid”. The official announcement came in January of last year by the director of Instagram, Adam Mosseri. He then announced the change as a sort of apology to users whose carefully curated profiles were disrupted when the app switched from square to more vertically oriented posts.
After the feature finally became available to everyone, Mosseri posted only one word on his profile: “Finally”. The comments under his post, as well as reactions on other social networks, were overwhelmingly positive. Many expressed their delight with comments such as “the best feature change yet” and “we’ve been waiting for this for years”. However, as reported by The Verge, some users took the opportunity to remind that they are still waiting for some other long-promised features, such as a native application for iPad.
Broader context and platform strategy
The introduction of the possibility of reorganizing the profile is not an isolated move, but part of a broader strategy by which Meta, Instagram’s umbrella company, seeks to empower content creators and give users greater control over their digital space. During 2026, the platform introduced several significant updates aimed precisely at this goal.
One of the key changes relates to the algorithm, which now gives a much higher priority to original content, while reducing the visibility of accounts that excessively share or recycle other people’s material. In addition, new tools for creators were introduced, such as “Trial Reels”, which enable testing of content with an audience that does not follow the author before the official announcement, and “Early Access Reels”, which show new content first to existing, most loyal followers. In general, the emphasis on social networks in 2026 is increasingly placed on authenticity, interactivity and community building, instead of perfectly polished, but often unattainable aesthetics. In this sense, the possibility of reorganizing the profile fits perfectly with the evolution of Instagram from a simple platform for sharing moments to a sophisticated tool for building a personal and professional brand, where visual identity is of crucial importance.
