The news in brief:
- A man of Sudanese origin has been recorded attempting to brutally murder a local citizen in Belfast.
- Passersby confronted him and stopped him from murdering the victim.
- The authorities announced that the immigration status of the foreign citizen is not yet clear, but it is claimed that he held a visa.
- The assassination attempt caused an uproar among conservatives and opponents of immigration, with calls for widespread protest.
- The difficult event comes at the height of civil unrest after the disclosure of records of the death of Henry Novak.
A particularly violent and difficult incident shocked the residents of Belfast in Northern Ireland after a man from Sudan was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder during an unusual attack that was recorded and published on social media. The publication provoked a wave of criticism and shock that also reached the British Parliament.
The incident took place yesterday (Monday) around 22:30 outside an apartment building on Kinnard Avenue in the north of the city. Passersby who were there noticed what was happening and tried to intervene before the police arrived. In the footage circulated on social media, citizens are seen struggling with the suspect and trying to overpower him, while another man repeatedly hits him with a game racket.
The victim, a man in his 40s, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries to his face, neck and back, and his condition was defined as critical.
The suspect, a man in his 30s from Sudan, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. The police stated that at first they thought it was a man of Somali origin, but later corrected the message and clarified that he is from Sudan. The British Daily Mail reported that he was in possession of a visara, but authorities have not yet confirmed his full identity or civil status.
The Northern Ireland police defined the incident as a “critical incident” and launched an urgent investigation to find out the circumstances of the attack and the motive for it, and it was reported that both the attacker and the victim live in the area. In the recording of the event, one of those present was heard shouting that the attacker was “trying to cut off his head”.
In the footage, the suspect is seen sitting on top of the victim and stabbing him in the head and neck area, while people around him are yelling at him to stop. Afterwards, several citizens were seen approaching him, struggling with him and managing to hold him back until the police arrived.
The event caused widespread shock throughout Britain. party leaderDUP (Democratic Unionist Party), Gavin Robinson, described the scenes as “unforgettable” and called the attack “the systematic mutilation of a man on the streets of Belfast”. In the British House of Representatives, he defined the event “as if taken from the Middle Ages.”
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the case “sickening” and said that he would have no tolerance for acts of violence of this kind on the country’s streets. The Prime Minister’s Office called on the public to remain calm and allow the police to complete the investigation.
Senior officials in the opposition demanded that more information be published about the suspect. Nigel Farage, the leader of the right-wing “Reform” party Nigel Farage said that the public has the right to know the identity and status of the attacker, while the leader of the opposition from the Conservatives Kami Bednock called on the police to “publish the facts as quickly as possible to clarify the circumstances of the case”.
Anti-immigration activists called for mass demonstrations in Belfast following the attack. Some postings online called for men over 18 to come dressed in dark clothes and be ready to “fight or be arrested”, which raised fears of widespread riots in the city.
The video adds to the anger and anti-foreign sentiment in the UK, and comes days after the Henry Novak murder case broke. Shocking footage released from police body cameras in Southampton shows 18-year-old British student Novak dying after being outrageously arrested by police. Novak was stabbed by a British citizen of Sikh origin – in an incident that took place in December and sparked great outrage at the conduct of the police and authorities and added to the outrage against foreigners, including immigrants.
