Artemis 3 – a mission to help NASA send people to the Moon

NASA’s Artemis 3 mission will be a key test for the systems that will land humans on the lunar surface.

Theo Yahoobefore the Artemis 2 mission took off in April, NASA had carefully planned the next mission. Like its predecessor, Artemis 3 is a key step forward in NASA’s ambitious goal of returning humans to the Moon and eventually reaching Mars.

To do this, NASA needs 3 main types of vehicles including rockets, modules that carry astronauts to their destination, and landing systems to bring them to ground. Artemis 2 shows the first two vehicles, NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) and the Orion spacecraft, operating as expected. The Artemis 3 mission will test the final vehicle and take place entirely in low Earth orbit. The core goal of this mission is to test the Orion spacecraft’s ability to rendezvous with the lander so that NASA can resolve any issues before launching the lander to the Moon.

Initially, Artemis 3 was described as a mission to return humans to the Moon for the first time since 1972. But earlier this year, NASA announced a change of plan and turned Artemis 3 into a test mission while Artemis 4 was a lunar landing mission.

NASA built its own rockets and Orion modules for Artemis missions but chose two private companies to develop systems to bring astronauts to the lunar surface: Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin. Now, NASA shares that it plans to test Orion’s ability to connect with “one or both” landers from the two companies above.

Theo Scientific Americanneither SpaceX’s Starship nor Blue Origin’s Blue Moon have ever been tested in such a situation. In its most recent announcement about Artemis 3, NASA shared that astronauts will not only attempt to connect with the lander, but will also exit the Orion capsule and enter the vehicle, simulating the transition between the spacecraft for a successful landing. The Orion will have an improved heat shield design to help reduce risks during reentry. The crew will also stay in Orion longer than on the Artemis 2 mission, which lasted about 10 days.

NASA has made preliminary plans for testing during the Artemis 3 mission. The SLS rocket will carry the Orion spacecraft carrying astronauts into Earth orbit. There, the crew will attempt to dock with the lunar lander and perform a series of other tests designed to evaluate landing readiness. The procedure is similar in many ways to the 1969 Apollo mission, in which three astronauts spent 10 days in low Earth orbit testing the spacecraft’s ability to land on the Moon.

Both SpaceX and Blue Origin have encountered some problems in the process of commercializing space travel, mainly related to the booster rockets that help send lunar landers into space to connect with NASA spacecraft. NASA’s future plans on the Moon, such as establishing an inhabited base, depend on private spacecraft that can deliver cargo to the Moon on a regular schedule, help astronauts survive and support research.

NASA has not revealed the exact launch date of Artemis 3 but only said the time in 2027. Similarly, the official launch date of Artemis 2 was only announced a few weeks in advance. If everything goes according to plan, the Artemis 4 mission will launch in early 2028 to send astronauts to the Moon. The next mission, Artemis 5, is expected to launch the same year and also land on the lunar surface to begin base construction. NASA only revealed it plans to launch lunar missions once a year after Artemis 5 ends.
