No more throwing your cups chipped in the trash, wondering about the future of the old sink or the sink that clutter the garage! The Kerambris recycling center, in Fouesnant (Finistère), has offered since the end of March 2025 to recycle ceramics, which will thus have a second life in various forms.
It is ecomaison, eco-organism approved by the State and which aims to “re-use and recycle objects and materials of the house, to preserve natural resources and protect the environment”, which chose the Kerambre site to experience this new project to recycle ceramic objects and packaging, better use for more virtuous recycling. Fouesnant is indeed one of the most important recycling centers in terms of volume on Finistère and has modern infrastructure.
Table art objects recovered by a resourcery
Since the launch of this experiment, of which a first assessment will be drawn in late September, people have been aware of this new sorting which favors reuse. Several kinds of sorting are to be taken into account.
“For what we call the art of the table, for example of ceramic dishes which is in good condition, we have a specific room. Either people give them directly to us, or we make a first sorting in the dumpster specially intended for ceramics, “explains Jean-Christophe Barberousse, manager of the waste pole of the community of communes of the Fouesnantais country (CCPF), which manages this recycling center. The objects will then be recovered by the Treuzkemm resourcery, in Quimper (Finistère) to be sold or given.
On the other hand, “as for sanitary, garden pots, ceramic packaging, dishes and ceramic decoration, in poor condition, individuals and professionals throw in the bucket installed for this purpose”, lists the agent.
Once the bucket full of objects cannot be reused, it will be shipped in a dedicated center, elsewhere in France. “Everything will be crushed in powder, which can be used in particular in the construction industry, in earthmoving and as a road under layers, under asphalt. It can also be recycled to redo ceramics, ”explains Roger Le Goff, president of the CCPF. An operation for an additional cost for the community of communes.
Consider a final sector
Finally, for tiling falls, “we have installed a special location for site tiles and unrelated lots. So people can use and use them for them. But what is broken obviously goes into the bucket, ”adds Jean-Christophe Barberousse.
Since the start of the experimentation, indicative panels on this new sorting of ceramics have been installed in the recycling center and people obviously play the game since, in a few weeks, 3.5 tonnes of ceramic objects and packaging have been collected.
At the end of the experiment, an assessment will determine if it is useful to consider the implementation of a final sector. But Roger Le Goff leaves confident about the future of this new environmental issue: “We are delighted to have been chosen for this experiment, because we have companies in our territory, especially in cold cuts or cooked dishes, such as Monique Rannou or Typiak, which use ceramics as a packaging. »»
Some companies in the Chuse sector are thus shown interested in this new form of sorting. While ceramics were so far intended for the household waste trash, once the recycling sector has been implemented, it could participate in reducing the use of plastic. As Roger Le Goff sums it up: “It is so much more pleasant and ecological to have dishes in ceramics, rather than in plastic. »»
