The personnel changeover on the tourist labor market has accelerated enormously in recent years, shows a special evaluation of the AMS, which is available to the courier. So within ten years, the proportion of Austrian citizens in those employed in tourism decreased by a quarter of 55.5 percent to 41.3 percent. During the same period, the employment of EU citizens and Third -country countries to almost 60 percent.
The strongest influx of tourism employees has come from Hungary in recent years, which mostly come across the border as a daily commuter to Burgenland, Vienna or Lower Austria. At eleven percent, the group is more than twice the size of the Germans with 4.5 percent. Romanians follow behind with 3.7 percent. The Turks, followed by the Bosnians and Ukrainians, present the largest group of third countries. Employment has increased continuously since 2014, and even the Corona setback from 2019 to 2021 has now been made up for.
Contingent exceeded
To cover the seasonal tips, may 5,000 seasons from non-EU countries be employed. The contingents were clearly exceeded in the previous year, the AMS writes. In Tyrol, Upper Austria and Salzburg in particular, many more seasons were employed in July than the quota provides. However, exceeding by up to 50 percent is well allowed at peak times if the annual quota is observed. In the winter season the crossing was in Tyrol, Vorarlberg and Salzburg Even higher.
The government now has that Seasoning quota around 500 to 5,500 increased. In addition, the recruitment of 2,500 seasonal workers from the EU accession countries of the Western Balkans (Montenegro, Serbia, Northern Macedonia, Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina) was made possible by their own seasonal quota.
Unemployment rose, less vacancies
In the previous year, a total of 230,000 people were employed in tourism at home in summer. For the unemployed, which was announced at the AMS, the job search “has also become more difficult for well -trained people,” the report says. The number of open spots has been going back continuously since 2022. In the 2024 summer season, the average stock of open spots in tourism was almost 10,000, which is almost 40 percent less than 2022.
At the same time, unemployment increased in the summer of the previous year 10 percent to around 30,000 employeesthere was also a plus in winter, although also very different in region. “Despite the increased number of overnight stays, we don’t feel a real relaxation on the tourist labor market,” interprets AMS boss Johannes Kopf the data.
