The value of construction in Mexico accumulated 17 consecutive months of decline and last September it plummeted 15.4 percent annually, reported the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
According to the National Survey of Construction Companies (ENEC), the downward trend intensified in the sector, since since April 2024 it has registered negative variations in the annual measurement, which has taken it to levels close to those it had in 2021, before the construction boom due to the flagship works of the previous six-year period.
The Inegi estimated that the value of construction production amounted to 48,860 million pesos in September. Civil engineering continued to show the greatest weakness, with an annual drop of 29.1 percent. Building presented an annual growth of one percent, while in the monthly measurement it also registered three falls in a row; that of September was 1.5 percent monthly.
The total employed personnel in construction companies remained unchanged compared to last August. By type of hiring, non-dependent personnel (who are hired and assigned for another business reason and receive fees or commissions without a fixed salary or salary) increased 0.2 percent, and the company’s dependent personnel decreased 0.1 percent (the number of workers increased 0.2 percent; administrative, accounting and management employees decreased 0.8 percent, and the group of “others” – which includes owners, family members, as well as other workers without remuneration – decreased 2.7 percent).
At an annual rate, in September 2025 the total employed personnel showed a reduction of 9.9 percent.
In the ninth month of the year, the hours worked in construction companies decreased 0.1 percent in relation to the previous month and at an annual rate they decreased 11.2 percent.
The average real salaries paid were one percent higher at a monthly rate. By component, salaries paid to workers rose 0.6 percent and those collected by administrative, accounting and management employees, one percent.
In the annual comparison, real average salaries advanced 4.4 percent last September.
With original figures (without statistical process and without calendar modification), Inegi revealed that the value of construction fell 15 percent annually in September, employed personnel fell 9.7 percent annually, hours worked 10 percent and salaries advanced 4.1 percent annually.
