EXIT Foundation seeks protection of Karlovac vineyards

Citizens’ Association “Karlovački vinogradi “and EXIT Foundation requested today the protection of vineyards and orchards in that area, because the amendment to the Spatial Plan of Sremski Karlovci plans to change the purpose of agricultural land at the Ciglana site into a zone of exploitation of mining raw materials.

“The plan is to change the purpose of the agricultural land used for fruit growing and viticulture and the construction land to the zone of exploitation of mining raw materials,” it is stated in the announcement of the EXIT foundation.

It is added that the citizens’ association “Karlovački vinogradi” has been warning for months about endangering the environment, human health, their vineyards, orchards and archeological sites in Sremski Karlovci, on the edges of the Fruška gora National Park.

The EXIT Foundation called on the municipality of Sremski Karlovci and the Ministry of Environmental Protection to listen to the arguments of the citizens and do everything in their power to preserve the well-known Karlovac vineyards and the entire landscape in Sremski Karlovci, which has invaluable cultural and historical value.

It is emphasized that the Karlovac vineyards are a symbol, not only of Vojvodina, but also of the whole of Serbia, whose preservation and improvement should be a priority, and that changing the purpose of the plots against the will of the owners of those plots is an inadmissible intention.

“This magical place where Fruška gora meets the largest European river with a view of half of Vojvodina has endless possibilities for the development of the organic economy, but also health tourism at the highest level. Instead of working to relocate all pollutants, including Ciglana, a completely anachronistic decision, equally harmful to human health and the economic interest of Sremski Karlovac, Vojvodina and Serbia “, stated the EXIT foundation.

The Association “Karlovac Vineyards” said that the planned exploitation zone is characterized by the highest quality country for the development of viticulture and fruit growing.

It is added that the explicit position of 80 percent of plot owners is that they do not want to change the purpose of the plots, that they do not want to sell them to Ciglani and that if the municipality changes the purpose of the land, the owners will not be able to receive subsidies for raising perennials and certificates for organic production. The association also stated that the IGM Stražilovo brickyard pollutes the air because it uses petroleum coke, the combustion of which drastically increases the emission of carbon dioxide.

The EXIT Foundation called on the inspection of Sremski Karlovci and the Ministry of Environmental Protection to check the emission of harmful gases and examine whether filters are used to purify the emitted gases.

In particular, as it is stated, it should be borne in mind that the Law on Renewal of the Cultural and Historical Heritage of Sremski Karlovci was adopted in May this year, and that renewal, among other things, envisages protection, arrangement and improvement of natural resources and environment.

How precious and important the Karlovac vineyards and the entire landscape are is shown, as stated, by the film “Karlovac vineyards, a landscape of possibilities”, and the idea of the film is to preserve and promote the values of that Fruška Gora region.
