The main reason for the increase is the loss of income that people are trying to make up for by either bungling themselves or having the bungler work. Thus, the shadow economy “serves as a buffer for otherwise much higher expected income losses”.
About a fifth of Austrians have resorted to the services of a “bungler” in the past twelve months. The broad effect is thus stable compared to 2021 and the spending behavior is similar to the previous year, the professor continues.
There has also been little change in the fields in which undeclared work is used: electrical work and car repairs (20 percent each) as well as beauty care and massage (15 percent each) are at the top of the bungling list, as in the past, followed by work in the areas of house, garden, apartment and tutoring.
