The export business of the winegrowers has developed very well despite the pandemic. Above all, the opening of the catering trade abroad after the lockdown contributed to the significant increase of 15.8 percent. A new record was set with total proceeds of EUR 216.8 million.
The managing director of Weinmarketing (AWM), Chris Yorke, was happy about a “huge success for the entire Austrian wine industry”. The new goal is a further increase to 250 million euros.
The most important export markets are Germany, followed by Switzerland and the USA, where the highest growth rates were achieved. There were also significant increases in Canada and China.
Above all, white wines in the quality segment were in demand. This area accounted for more than half of export earnings. The strategy of focusing on quality has paid off.
However, without “stable harvest quantities” it will hardly be possible to maintain the successful course, emphasized winegrowing president Johannes Schmuckenschlager. If the harvest volume falls significantly, the markets abroad can no longer be fully supplied. It is very difficult to regain market share that was lost due to insufficient delivery volumes.
