` – Italy still far from central, the first objective, ‘Defeating poverty’, of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). According to the Istat Report, in 2020, over 2 million families (equal to 7.7%), for a total of over 5.6 million individuals (9.4%), are in conditions of absolute poverty. Compared to last year, the incidence of poverty is growing especially in the Northwest (10.1% individuals in absolute poverty; +3.3 percentage points compared to 2019) and in the Northeast (8.2%, +1, 6 pp).
The incidence of absolute poverty increases significantly in all age groups, except for the over 65s. In 2020, belonging to families made up of only the elderly or in which there is an elderly person – often the holder of a retirement income – reduces the risk of being in absolute poverty.
Istat then underlines that the spread of the infections had a significant impact on the failure to request healthcare services. The share of people who declare that they have given up a medical examination despite needing it rose to 9.6% in 2020 from 6.3% in 2019 and of these, about half reported a problem related to Covid-19 as the cause.
