United Nations AI Council: Experience report from the only German member

Health, education, energy and food supply: AI can help in all areas – if you know the risks. A report from the only German member of the United Nations AI Council.

A few years ago, it was the nerds in parliaments who were concerned with artificial intelligence. The German Bundestag had convened a commission of inquiry into its opportunities and risks, and a narrow circle of people on the science pages of newspapers argued about whether humanity would soon be dominated by artificial intelligence. However, with Chat-GPT, AI finally made it to the front pages and has since been discussed at the highest political level. After the G7, the G20, the OECD and many other initiatives, such as the “AI Safety Summit” organized by Great Britain, discussed the need for political and social action to shape artificial intelligence, the United Nations has now also taken up the topic. Quite rightly, because many parts of the world have been left out of the processes initiated so far.
