Comic exhibition at the Centre Pompidou: Long overdue

From “Krazy Kat” to “Persepolis”, from “funnies” for children to graphic novels: The Centre Pompidou in Paris is showing what is probably the largest comic exhibition ever. A statement.

The huge collection of the Musée National d’Art Moderne in the Centre Pompidou in Paris, which with 3.3 million visitors a year has almost as many visitors as all of Berlin’s museums combined, comprises 40,000 works of art, including some of the most important of the 20th century: by Matisse, Gerhard Richter, Malevich, Brancusi and many, many others. And somewhere in a remote corner of the depot there is also an inconspicuous sheet of paper with a few little men on it: it is a page from Hergé’s “Tintin”, the only comic work in the collection. And all this in Paris, in France, which, together with Belgium and Japan, is the most important comic region in the world.
