The RBB and the Ruhgelder: Always keep paying nicely

The court ruling in the process between the former RBB program director Claudia Nothelle and the public service broadcaster brought the so-called retirement practice back into the headlines in the public service system.

As a consequence, the RBB Nothelle must pay retrospectively and continue to pay 8,347 euros per month; The fact that she earns around 7,000 euros again as a professor for television journalism at the Magdeburg-Stendhal University of Applied Sciences is right, in the contract between the Nothelle and the broadcaster the crediting of the additional earnings according to the Nothelles was not agreed.

Was and is Claudia Nothelle the only manager who receives a retirement allowance? On Tagesspiegel request, spokesman Justus Demmer had announced at the beginning of March that “the RBB does not pay any” Restgelger “in the sense of bridging payments between (premature) working ends and the beginning of age references”. Then came the judgment in the dispute with Claudia Nothelle – and now the broadcaster pays again.

The RBB wants to have rest on the question of pension

But only in the case of emergency? The “Welt am Sonntag” reported that in 2022 the RBB made payments of 2.2 million euros in 17 people. On another Tagesspiegel request on the topic, it said: “The RBB does not comment on individual contractual conditions with former employees, not indirectly.”

Is that a practicable, justified behavior that is understandable? Of course not. The Berlin-Brandenburg radio now wants to have rest in the pension question. Understandable humanly, not in the matter. The public has to find out how with the half a billion euros annually, with which the public voluntarily or not voluntarily finances the broadcaster, is handled in the two -country center.

That should also be interested in the supervisory bodies. Not the current management, not the current board of directors, have concluded and denied the contracts, but the effects are still up to date. The broadcaster will use little or nothing to impose an information lock above it, the behavior only feeds the given distrust about the adequate use of the radio contributions.

The past of the RBB shapes its present, the Bundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg cannot avoid this. Not in the broadcaster itself, not in public.
