“Burgtheater” by Elfriede Jelinek: satisfaction after 40 years

When Elfriede Jelinek opened the Nazi knitting of the actor clan Hörbiger in 1985, she was insulted as a nest thriller. Now her piece of “Burgtheater” is being performed for the first time at the Burgtheater.

Birgit Minichmayr sits at a long table and asks her “Siaßn Bauxerln” to “nice to snap off the nockers, go”. Minichmayr plays a theater diva that just hit her children on the table. After that, in an exaggerated Austrian singing, she will cable with her husband, command her maid and sink into self -pity again and again. It is a grotesque boulevard comedy about a theater family that read Minichmayr and other actresses on the stage of the Vienna Burgtheater. Only that it deals with violence, war and fellow drivers and everything is presented in a carefully composed (and sometimes very funny) dialect future.
