The International Festival of Photography and Visual Arts PHotoESPAÑA has awarded its 2021 prize to the photographer Isabel Muñoz, “one of the most important figures in the current Spanish photography scene”, National Photography Award and two World Press Photo awards.
With this award, PHotoESPAÑA wanted to recognize the photographer “for his career marked by his commitment to photography and the visual arts“.” Looking at people and the planet, and denouncing difficulties, but always with an optimistic look“, added the jury.
Furthermore, the ruling recognizes Muñoz as “a brave woman who has investigated in her projects to extract the essence” of the human being: from ethnic minorities to urban tribes or groups at risk of exclusion. “His commitment has taken him to the most remote corners of the planet, such as the bottom of the ocean.“, he pointed out.
“Muñoz has interpreted like no one else the ability of photography to express movement with his projects around the human body and dance. Always trying to share their emotions and convey a message of hope“, the jury has highlighted.
The photographer receives the PHotoESPAÑA Award in a ceremony at the Lázaro Galdiano Museum in which the PHotoESPAÑA Special Award is also recognized for Rosa Ros for her support of Spanish photography, materialized for more than 20 years, with the creation of the Bartolomé Ros Award, which highlights within the festival the best careers of photographers and professionals in Spanish photography.
The following have been recognized with the PHotoESPAÑA Award: Spanish photojournalism, Donna Ferrato, Samuel Fosso, Cristina García Rodero, Harry Gruyaert, Paz Errázuriz, Ramón Masats, Bernard Plossu, Alberto García-Alix, Thomas Ruff, Graciela Iturbide, Malick Sidibé, Martin Parr , Robert Frank, Hiroshi Sugimoto, William Klein, William Eggleston, Helena Almeida, Nan Goldin, Duane Michals, Chema Madoz, Luis González Palma and Josef Koudelka.
