Mikko Koivusipilä, I heard that you had left Nelonen Media.
“Yeah, that’s right.”
Is this related to the Warner pattern somehow?
“Probably partially, but not quite directly. I’ve been thinking for a long time about what I’m going to do. Now was a good moment, so that organization can shape itself.”
When did you decide to leave?
“The cooperation was that it was good to do it at this point. If I ever have to leave, then now. I have been at Sanoma for eighteen years and now I have the same feeling that they can do without us there. I left with a good mood, nothing more.”
What are your plans now?
“I have done so comprehensively the entire music field and the media field, televisions, live shows, A&R work, publishing companies and everything that has been done here.”
There is nothing in the scope at the moment?
“There’s nothing in the binoculars right now. I’ve been thinking that I need to draw oxygen for a while and see where the black would be the most useful. But there’s no plan.”
Are you more interested in the record companies or the media?
“Good question. Media probably.”
What kind of feelings do you remember your Sanoma career with?
“I once jumped in there as an assistant for one radio channel, and was free to hustle. First, the radio channels were fixed. Then the entire TV music model was changed so that the production companies don’t decide it, but the music is owned by the channel, just like on the radio. I was also bringing [levy-yhtiö] Echo to Nelose. And for the last six years, I learned how to develop quite big concerts and festivals. I’ve been able to do this, and the salary has come every month, I can’t be anything but satisfied.”
What do you think about the change in the music market at the moment?
“Before music was consumed by men in their forties, now by young women. And artificial intelligence and new platforms are coming into people’s lives, you should learn something all the time. Music could perhaps be the safe haven to return to. It is interesting to watch how it affects what is offered to people.”
Do you think that you will start cooperating more strongly with your wife Mariska?
“Well, it has been done over time. The wife has a publishing company, so you can do something there. And of course I’d be happy to help the lady.”
HS and Nelonen Media belong to the Sanoma Group.
