Photojournalism addresses what is most true about the human experience; it’s where our understanding of beauty fails us, opined Ana Bracken, first-place winner of the 2022 World Press Photo (WWP) competition. The singular images, which surprise and reveal something universal, are exhibited at the Franz Mayer Museum with the selection of winners opening windows to realities from all over the world.

I see that in this exhibition and in each story, as in journalism, you deal with challenges, pain and changeexpressed the Canadian photographer at the opening conference of the exhibition at the venue in the Historic Center.

We can and should include joy, abundance, and harmony in our reporting, but our existence will inevitably contain pain, decay, and conflict.

The images of the Mexican Yahel Martínez, winner in the Open Format category, in the North and Central America region, are included. The Serie Flower of time: the red mountain of Guerrero makes a luminous reflection on the violence of the narco and the inhabitants of the mountains who plant poppies to survive.

They are beautiful stories and images, but not because they are pleasant, but because they share a fixed look at our time to find that something that resists, is wise and good. It’s the kind of beauty that gives me courage for whatever comes nextsummed up the independent photographer, who stressed that people are the story, more than machines with advanced technology cameras.

Modifications to the format

Giant prints of the photos were incorporated into a new design for the annual exhibition, in an aesthetic that is born between dramatic stories. This edition of the WWP the 122 works were placed in the main room of the museum and not between the portals of its patio. An audio guide is available for free download to enrich the tour.

Similarly, this year changed the strategy of the prestigious contest organized by the Amsterdam-based foundation, explained the curator Martha Echevarría. The selection and qualification was made in a division of six world regions, with the purpose of having greater geographic balance and inclusion, with professionals who live close to local issues. The categories changed to singles, stories, long-term projects and open format, and were judged by a regional jury.

For this edition, 64,823 images were received from 4,066 photographers from 130 countries, of which four global and 24 regional winners were recognized. connecting the world with the stories that matteras inscribed on one of the walls of the Franz Mayer (45 Hidalgo Avenue, Historic Center).
