Multiply the places of art in the area to improve the tourist attraction even in the provincial areas, loosening the grip on the great cities of art. This is the goal of the ‘Uffizi Diffusi’ project, relaunched by the Minister for Cultural Heritage and Activities, Dario Franceschini, who is visiting Montelupo Fiorentino to celebrate the upcoming inclusion of the Medici villa dell’Ambrogiana in the Tuscan museum network. Also present were the president of the Tuscany Region, Eugenio Giani and the mayor of Montelupo Fiorentino, Paolo Masetti.
“Italy – explains Franceschini – is full of cities of art, villages, beauties, archaeological sites and landscaped places that do not attract the international tourism that they could attract. It is no longer alone a need to spread growth and beauty but also to decongest places that suffer from overbooking and crowding “.
The structure overlooking the Arno, formerly the site of a judicial psychiatric hospital, is a candidate to become part of the project launched by the director of the Uffizi Gallery, Eike Schimdt, with the possibility in the future to host some of the works of art present in Florence. The State Property, owner of the property, had already signed an agreement with the Tuscany Region and the municipal administration in 2017 for the enhancement of the complex which is now ready to be reborn.
“This is a splendid place – underlines the minister – it is evident that a great national project is needed here. For the size, for the resources they need, it cannot be placed only on the shoulders of the Municipality of Montelupo and the Region, we are here to put together energy and resources to make it a great recovery project to a cultural use. There is a nice idea we are working on, to have part of the Uffizi works here, because part of the works that are in the deposits were here, but you cannot announce certain things if you do not have the resources to do so first “.
For the president of the Tuscany Region, Eugenio Giani, “it is a project that can really give meaning to that desire to make a tourist presence more widespread” and “in particular this place, the Villa Ambrogiana, the favorite of Ferdinando dei Medici that stopped here with his ferry along the journey on the Arno, can become a cultural destination that gives the sense of the Uffizi spread throughout Tuscany, offering a new vision to tourism ”.
Satisfaction also on the part of the mayor of Montelupo Fiorentino: “It is a historic day for this complex that for too many decades has been used improperly, finally we have a unique opportunity to recover it and I am glad that next to the Municipality, which will have an important return, there are Giani and Franceschini who agree in recovering this incredibly beautiful asset ”. The next step will be to define the recovery project and start the work but Masetti preaches calm: “Now we will think about which administrative act will be the most appropriate to move forward but the most important thing is the political will and that is there. Giving times is not very cautious, the goal is to start early, then we know it, in our country public works take a very long time, but I am satisfied because now an important journey begins “.
