Antero Chavez died; elevated the execution of the cymbals to a work of art

Percussionist Antero Chávez passed away last Wednesday at the age of 77. He raised the performance of the cymbals in the symphony orchestras of which he was a part to the category of a work of art. With a single note in a two and a half hour concert, he took the night.

He was a member of the percussionists of the Mexico City Philharmonic for almost two decades, but in reality he was a puma at heart. He was trained in the Philharmonic Orchestra of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (Ofunam), where he counterpointed the spectacular nature of Eduardo Mata in the baton on the podium and he, Antero, at the back of the auditorium stage That Guevara, then headquarters of the group, blew up the insular note of the night to turn it into great fireworks.

Precisely in that auditorium, he also starred in the hubbub of the crowds of young people who escaped from classes to enjoy Chaplin’s short film marathons. Above the tons of laughter from the packed auditorium, Antero’s echoed deep, sitting next to me on the steps, since there were no more free seats.

He made his cymbals sound, the public went crazy and the gigantic Antero smiled.Photo taken from Twitter

Percussionists in symphony orchestras play few notes during a concert. We attended many times just to see it, knowing that the announced repertoire included moments of spectacular cymbals.

Antero prepared the moment with masterful playwriting, suspense and emotion. Before his cymbals sounded, we were already enjoying it, because he brandished them in the air and when they sounded, he made a spectacular gesture with his face and his whole body, he was voluminous. And the public went crazy with pleasure. Chinese skin. And the gigantic Antero smiled. So generous of meat that in a gesture of friendship, affection and admiration I nicknamed it The Orson Welles of cymbals.

In addition to being one of the best percussionists in the history of music in Mexico, Antero Chávez was a man with a good heart, a movie buff, a reader and the owner of a sovereign style of humor.

One of his famous phrases resounds in the Mexican music scene: I don’t know anything about music, but yes, note that it touches me, note that I fuck it.
