“Barocco” – Kirill Serebrennikow’s political protest revue in Hamburg

No electrician in the world would climb a lamppost in a thunderstorm to fix streetlights. But it is precisely with this image that Kirill Serebrennikov’s “musical manifesto” begins, “Barocco”, which has now premiered at the Thalia Theater in Hamburg. Watched by a black crowd with umbrellas, from whom it is not clear what they are waiting for, maybe a dead man, the craftsman naturally dies of electrocution. This enigmatic “opening thesis” continues Serebrennikov’s “Manifesto” with a potpourri of scenes about politically motivated self-immolation.
