More than 100 bone remains reveal pre-Hispanic life on the AIFA grounds

Tecámac, Mex., A total of 112 human skeletons, from 104 burials, recovered from the former Santa Lucía Hacienda during the construction of the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) were analyzed and reveal aspects of life in that area during the pre-Hispanic era.

The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) reported that the anthropophysical analysis was carried out by the head of the Bioarchaeology Section of the Archaeological Rescue Directorate (DSA), Jorge Arturo Talavera González, and his team.

The skeletons were recovered from the sites Tlatel 7 y No Grid 5both from the Coyotlatelco chronology (600-900 AD), and Xaltocan polygon 6from the Late Postclassic period (1200-1500 AD).

He added that the collection of Tlatel 7 It consists of 19 skeletons, in a regular state of preservation, which correspond to 12 adults (seven women and five men), between 25 and 35 years old at the time of death, and the rest to infants and one adolescent.

In a statement, he highlighted that the most outstanding discovery of this site is the skeleton of a woman between 35 and 40 years of age, extracted from the Burial 4which has a fracture in the lower part of the left arm (pseudoarthrosis) corresponding to the amputation of the limb, which must have been extremely painful.

“What is interesting is that the bone imprints show bone tissue growth, indicating that in addition to the woman surviving between five and seven months after the traumatic event, she was fitted with a prosthesis to help her stabilize her arm and heal, which was impossible without surgery, so she ultimately died, possibly as a result of an infection.

We have formulated two hypotheses about this event: the first is that the woman reacted instinctively to an attack and used her arm to cover her face, and the second is that she was a warrior who, by covering herself with a chimalli (shield), suffered the injury.said Talavera González.

He said that the seven female burials mentioned showed trauma to the skull and nose, which reinforces the theory of a population of combatants.

Meanwhile, at the Xaltocán site, 58 human burials were recorded, some of which were collective, for a total of 66 individuals, half of which were infants and some were fetuses.

“This is the first time in the 13 years I have been in this department that I have come across such a large number of child skeletons, in a regular state of preservation, which reveals a high rate of infant mortality.

Our theory is that, because Xaltocán had conflicts with Cuautitlán, it is likely that the local children were subjected to constant stress which, combined with poor nutrition, weakened them.

He said that of the 66 individuals, there is the only case of a male skeleton, between 18 and 20 years of age, with probable poliomyelitis or congenital hip dislocation, which will be analyzed by biomechanics specialists from the National Rehabilitation Institute, in order to determine the way in which he moved.

He noted that on the site No grid 5 30 skeletons were found, of which 19 correspond to women and 11 to men.

The INAH announced that the recovered burials are the result of excavations undertaken during the Archaeological Rescue Project at the AIFA works, directed by Rubén Manzanilla López, which began in May 2019 and concluded in May 2022.

The analysis of the archaeological material was carried out from November 2021 to March 2024 and two reports on the physical anthropology studies were submitted to the INAH Archaeology Council.
