Is there a shortage of Acmo machines in Israel?

In recent days, there have been warnings from hospitals about a severe shortage of Acmo devices, due to the increase in the corona wave. This is despite the fact that the number of serious patients is low compared to the peak of the previous wave and despite the fact that in recent months the number of Acmo machines in Israel has doubled, from 40 to 80.

“In fact, in relation to the world, our situation is good,” explains Dr. Yigal Kasif, director of the Acme service at Sheba Hospital and head of the Israeli Acme Society. At this stage, we are able to provide a full solution to patients, but as the current wave increases, we are nearing the end. “

Acemo devices are used to treat patients with pulmonary or cardiac failure. Routinely, they are mainly used to treat heart patients. In the corona a large part of them are used to save the lives of critically ill patients – the vast majority of whom are not vaccinated.

Are hospital staffs forced to choose who will receive treatment and who will not?

Naturally, care resources are limited. Emergency medical teams make the decisions based on medical considerations, and depending on the chances of treatment benefiting the patient. “We are now at the limit of the State of Israel’s ability to care for patients in need of Acme,” says Dr. Kasif. “I hope we do not pass it. Because if the current wave intensifies, we will reach a stage where it will be difficult to find beds available for patients. “

Why is the shortage more noticeable now, even though in previous waves the number of serious patients was higher?

Even in previous waves there were stages that brought the system to the flow threshold. But since then, hospitals have changed treatment practices. Shlomi Marom, Ichilov’s chief technologist and head of the Acme team, explains that unlike previous waves, in which entire corona wards were opened, now the distribution format in the hospital is different, so as not to interfere with the routine activities of other wards in the hospital. And in the world, today it is customary to connect respirators to Acmo devices at earlier stages than before. Therefore the demand for devices is higher, and the distress is increasing. In addition, today the critically ill patients are younger than before, and they need Acme treatment more than the adults, because for the adults the treatment is too difficult and less effective.

How many Acmo machines do you need to address all patients?

Former Health Ministry Director General Hezi Levy said this week that the ministry is working to purchase more machines. But it is doubtful that this will help. Special training, “explains Dr. Kasif. As the workload in hospitals increases, so does the pressure on medical staff. Shlomi Marom also describes an abrasive and difficult burden on the intensive care teams. Even if more brothers and sisters are trained to treat Acme, he says, urgent reinforcement of standards is needed.

Can hospitals prevent treatment from patients who have not been vaccinated?

“There is no such consideration,” says Dr. Kasif. “Hospitals provide a solution for every patient in distress. In order to prevent patient care, the professional opinion of three intensive care managers is required, and this does not happen. ” The whole public and of course the health care system.
