Hundreds of millions around the world suffer from migraines, including about 15 percent of Israelis. Women suffer from the phenomenon three times more than men. The disorder is attributed to genetics and environmental causes and is most commonly found in several members of the same family. “Migraine is an inherited disease with clear symptoms,” explains Dr. Roni Sharon, a neurologist and director of the Head and Face Center in Tel Hashomer. “It is not just a headache. The pain may appear between the eyes, in the temples. It is so powerful that it causes its sufferers to stop functioning. They take painkillers, but these can only dull the intensity of the pain, but not prevent the migraine. ”

Migraine is defined as chronic when suffering from headaches more than 15 times a month, of which at least eight are migraine days. How is it expressed? Differently in each. Migraine has four stages: Prodrome – Prodrome, in which sufferers will experience nervousness, mood swings, euphoria or alternatively depression, exhaustion, digestive problems and more. The second stage is called aura aura, in which patients may suffer from visual difficulties, punctures on the sides of the body, a feeling of circumcision, speech disorders and movement disorders. In the third stage comes the pain. Patients usually experience it on one side of the head and it gradually gets worse. Every exercise exacerbates it. Sufferers of the attack are sensitive to light, smell or sound and may feel nauseous. Finally comes the post stage South POSTDROME. The patient is left with dull pain, vague thought and a feeling of hangover. Some will actually report a feeling of euphoria.

How do patients usually cope?

“Migraine sufferers take headache prevention treatments. There are various medications that are taken orally on a daily basis. They have many side effects, including confusion, difficulty finding words, fatigue, dizziness, hair loss and other adverse reactions. More than 80 percent of patients stop. The drugs because of effective problems or side effects. ”

So what are the options available to migraine sufferers? There are several types of treatments. One type is behavioral: to the extent that triggers are known to cause seizures, they can be avoided.
