A nursing assistant in one of the internal wards at Rambam Hospital was attacked today (Wednesday) at noon by a patient, and lost consciousness for several minutes, the hospital said.

According to the hospital, the incident took place at the bedside of a patient in his 50s who was supposed to be released from hospital today. The assistant said that she tried to help the patient get dressed and then he punched her right in the head. She fell to the floor and lost consciousness for several minutes. She was referred to the emergency room with a bruise on her forehead and was medically examined. Later it will be decided whether she will have to stay in the hospital for observation.
At the same time, police forces who were called to the medical center, arrested the suspect, a resident of Kiryat Ata in his 50s, for questioning at the police station in the city. Depending on the development of the investigation and its findings, the police will decide tomorrow whether to request an extension of his detention at the Haifa Magistrate’s Court.
Prime Minister, Yair Lapidtweeted on his Twitter account: “It is not possible for a medical staff worker in a hospital to be attacked by a patient. It is impossible to ignore the cry that comes from the medical staff, who are forced to endure unbearable violence in the hospitals and clinics. We will support and promote any proposal designed to protect the medical staff, just as they guard upon us. The blood of the medical teams will not be in vain.”

Earlier this month, a visitor in his late 60s attacked a security guard at the entrance to Billinson Hospital after he disobeyed her instructions regarding parking, causing her to break her nose as a result of being punched in the face. Following the incident, police officers were called to the scene and arrested the attacker. Police investigators took testimony from the security guard who is being treated in the emergency room.
