West Nile virus-carrying mosquitoes found in southern Israel

West Nile virus-carrying mosquitoes have been found in the Yeruham and Ramat Negev regional councils.

The Ministry of Ecology reports that dangerous insects were identified during a routine inspection carried out regularly by the pest control department.

The Ministry of Ecology informed the municipalities and local councils about the results of the inspection and also issued instructions on mosquito control.

The Nile virus is transmitted by mosquitoes that feed on the blood of migratory birds and other animals. The symptoms of the disease are similar to the flu. Weakened and elderly people bitten by a mosquito-carrier of infection can get serious complications on the brain.
