Without shampoo or sunscreen: Israelis who avoid chemicals
When was the last time you checked the labels of the products you use every day – food products, creams, makeup, cleaning products and disposable utensils? At best we flip to see that everything is fine, and even in cases where we read the fine print, they do not always reflect the full meaning behind them.Take for example the issue of disposable utensils that have recently gained title due to the high tax imposed on them. According to Adam Teva VeDin, Israelis spend NIS 2 billion a year on disposable utensils, and according to studies around the world, the amount of plastic waste that reaches the seas and oceans each year is between 5 and 12 million tons, some of which find their way to animals. Who also come to us on a plate and from there to the digestive tract.

It is not easy to escape pollutants. Is it even possible to lead a life without them? Depends on who you ask. “Everything is made of chemicals, from food to water,” says Dr. Hagit Olnowski, an expert in health and environmental risk management. An American research institute for environmental pollutants tested exposure to bisphonel A, a substance found mainly in baby bottles, cans, in fact it is the material that gives the plastic its strength and transparency. Bisphonel A disrupts the hormonal activity in the body and it also includes obesity, attention and concentration, diabetes and even cancer. “A urine test in people who are aware of the danger in the substance did show small amounts of it, but also found larger amounts of bisphonel F and bisponel S whose danger is similar, but did less research on them, and we have no reason to assume they are less dangerous.”

So reading labels is not really the way?
“When I am told about a product that is ‘without’, I always ask two questions: why was it there before and what was its name in its place. For example deodorant without aluminum. What is the role of aluminum and what material has it been replaced? In the amounts that it has in deodorant, the answer is an unequivocal “no.” Aluminum is present in our food, in our drinking water, our body excretes it all the time.

“Another example, shampoo without SLS Which is the substance that causes foaming. If the shampoo still foams what is the name of the place? In the past, monosodium glutamate found in soup powders was thought to be harmful to health, and eventually studies did not validate the matter, instead of the monosodium as harmful as salt no longer called dried celery, which may sound better but the truth is that it contains nitrites that harm health. Why after all there is a shampoo without SLS even though it is harmless and why are there monosodium-free soup powders? Because it’s a way to charge us more money. ”

“I worked for big drug companies and I realized that what we put into our bodies is what stops us.”

Dorit Raz, a pensioner from Even Yehuda, suffered from severe asthma for many years, when she immigrated to Israel from Canada at the age of 23 and decided that there must be a healthier way to live. “The first thing I changed was diet,” she says, “it seemed logical to me that food without chemicals would help my body. Twice in my life I almost died of asthma and was not willing to accept it. I worked for big drug companies and realized that what we put into our bodies is what stops us. I started researching, and discovering all sorts of things that do not teach us.I started reading labels, and talked to holistic therapists.

Nutrition is not everything. There are also face creams, and shampoos and sunscreens that put a lot of chemicals in there, which penetrate through the pores and cause a whole generation of unhealthy people. I eat organic vegetables, do not buy shampoos that contain sulfates, or alcohol. Trying to use cotton clothes. We have been taught that the sun is our enemy I do not believe and do not agree. People suffer from vitamin D deficiency because they have stopped sunbathing. What really causes cancer are the chemicals in the creams. ”

Feel a change?
“I have not had an asthma attack since the age of 45 and I am already at the age of 68. I do not take medication, do not suffer from cholesterol, diabetes, or high blood pressure. I do not have paracetamol at home. When I was seven months pregnant, I got inflammation in their appendix. I was afraid of the fetus and did not want to. My homeopath gave me to eat a whole garlic head, garlic has antibiotic properties, and that’s what I did during the night. In the morning they came to take me for surgery, but I felt much better. “They postponed the surgery and I have not undergone it to this day. Extreme causes a natural imbalance to the body. Every body is different and therefore not everything is suitable for everyone. One should listen to it and not be tempted to chemicals.”

“Not many people know for example how much phosphorus there is in milk”

Moran Gottfried, a naturopathic student who owns a food truck and lives in Moshav Haniel in the Hefer Valley, has been avoiding chemicals for years. Moran has always had an environmental awareness, but she got the real upheaval four and a half years ago, when she was pregnant and looking for oil to rub on her stomach. That’s how she casually read the labels and her eyes darkened. “There were a lot of ingredients, I did not know what they were, and I wondered if they reach the fetus,” she says. Cleansing. It scared me a lot, the use of these chemicals is very dangerous and they have an effect on the nervous system, hormonal disorders, migraines, not to mention cancer. To read and understand labels you need knowledge, and I started researching. I had a hard time applying creams. “Who tested these materials, who tried them?”

What are you paying attention to today?
“On everything. Food, detergents and cosmetics and clothes. I’m not an extreme person but I do the maximum I can. I always prefer cotton, even if it’s pads that are also reusable. I stopped using fabric softener, using washing powder I scrape with solid soap Prepare, or I buy from a company that produces organic powder. I put vinegar instead of conditioner. You can add essential oil like lavender. I prefer second-hand clothes, hardly go into malls. most.

The diet at home is vegan. Not many people know for example how much phosphorus there is in milk. There is much more phosphorus than calcium so those who drink milk to prevent osteoporosis (calcium leakage) it is not effective. People do not associate what they spread with diseases, unaware that there are creams that contain toxins that are absorbed into the blood. It is better to use materials based on zinc that can not be absorbed into the pores of the skin. ”

Do you also care about the planet?
“I take care of the planet first, I don’t use plastic as much as I can. I’m just one, and everyone has to take responsibility. There are companies today that understand this. There is a company that uses sugar cane instead of plastic. There are toiletries based on organic natural materials. A few years ago “I went into the company for days and she just cleaned the stove with a degreaser, the smell hit me and I got a headache. My body signaled to me that it was a dangerous substance.”

Feeling changed?
“Sure. The skin is smoother, less dry, the clothes do not smell like a synthetic conditioner, and the odors do not cause me headaches. And most importantly I know there is no chance of a hormonal disruption following them.”

In Moran’s coffee cart you will find quite a few smoothies based on superfood, and there are some that come especially just to eat the bowl of acai, a sour Brazilian fruit with an ice cream texture that is topped with healthy and delicious toppings. Properly for those who avoid chemicals, the hardness is perishable and edible and so are the spoons that are made of waffle.

What can be done to still be exposed to as little chemicals as possible? Dr. Olnowski, first of all, wants to calm down: “Anxiety does not help us to be healthy.”

  • food. Eat as varied and balanced as possible and as little processed food as possible. Fewer cans and more fresh or frozen food.
  • Toiletries. Be very careful to buy cosmetics only with a license from the Ministry of Health. What the Ministry of Health approves is probably less dangerous. Do not be tempted by products that say ‘no’, because the alternative may be more harmful and cost us much more.
  • Plastic. Use as little plastic as possible. There is almost no oversight of what is written on plastic boxes. Even if it is written that a microwave can be used it is not safe. Buy plastic products only from places that know the manufacturer. In general, glass or stainless steel is preferable. If you need a disposable one, aluminum is better. The consumables are no longer safe to use than plastic. In Israel, they also have no environmental significance, because we do not have biodegradable organic separation, which is the case in Europe.
  • cosmetics. Read the instructions on cosmetics and cleaning products. For example do not mix detergent with vinegar it can react. The key word is diversity and balance. Once we do not use much of the same the chance of it harming us is small. No one can test how much arsenic there is in rice on all its products, how much cyanide toxin there is in almonds. Do not let anyone work on you with exorbitant prices on products that are supposedly healthier.
