Football: AEK Athens formalizes the arrival of Anthony Martial

Free since leaving Manchester United this summer, Anthony Martial will therefore be setting up shop at AEK Athens. The club from the Greek capital, currently leader of its championship with 10 points after 4 matches, has already made his recruitment official on its website. In reality, the 28-year-old international (30 caps) is only expected early in the evening in Athens (7:30 p.m. French time) where nearly 5,000 supporters are expected at the airport to welcome him.

He will then undergo his medical examination and sign a three-year contract. Having arrived in England in 2015 for 60 million euros from AS Monaco, he has never really managed to establish himself in Manchester despite a particularly prolific 2019-2020 season, with 17 goals scored in the Premier League.

He then failed to confirm this statistical improvement and was even the subject of an inconclusive loan to FC Seville during the second half of the 2021-2022 season. During the past season, he was not part of the plans of the Dutch technician Erik ten Hag. His last appearance in all competitions dates back to December 9, 2023 against Bournemouth in the Premier League. At the same time, his career with the Blues, where he has not played since September 2021 against Finland, is at a standstill (2-0).

At AEK, Martial will swell the ranks of a team that includes experienced players such as the Argentinian Erik Lamela, the Croatian Domagoj Vida and the Greek Petros Mantalos. A team also seeking revenge after its elimination in the C4 play-offs against Noah’s Armenians.
