More than 50 athletes urged the organizers in an open letter to change the start to the morning to safeguard the athletes’ health. The interest organization Athleten Deutschland made this announcement on Monday.

On August 15, verdicts in the marathon are expected. Currently, the males begin an hour after the ladies at 10.30 a.m. The athletes would be at danger for heat sickness with predicted temperatures well above 30 degrees. The European Athletics Association has agreed to postpone the start times if the weather poses a health danger for the competitors.

However, such factors must not put the athletes’ health at unnecessary risk “, stressed Fabienne Königstein, a marathon runner and member of Athletes Germany’s executive committee. The marathon does not include Austria.
