Misa Rodríguez returns to a rejuvenated team without Paredes or Hermoso

Goalkeeper Misa Rodríguez, a large number of new young faces and the absences of veterans like Irene Paredes and Jenni Hermoso are the big news on the list of 25 called up by the women’s national soccer team, Sonia Bermúdez, for the start of the qualifying phase for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil against Iceland and Ukraine.

The Madrid goalkeeper had not been called up with the current world champion since the last Olympic Games in Paris in 2024 and enters a position where the starter Cata Coll (FC Barcelona) is absent and where Enith Salon (Servette) also returns, who was part of the world champion team in 2023.

But in addition, the absences of veterans such as captain Irene Paredes, Jenni Hermoso, Esther González or Cristina Martín-Prieto, are counteracted by the appearance of new young players such as defenders Martina Fernández (Everton), Aiara Aguirrezabala (Real Sociedad) and Sandra Villafañe (Madrid CFF) or forward Ornella Vignola (Everton). Another world champion also returns, like center back Laia Codina (Arsenal).

Spain, which closed the year 2025 by winning the Nations League title for the second time, will open its activity in 2026 on Tuesday, March 3 against Iceland, which it will host at 7:00 p.m. at the Skyfi Castalia Stadium in Castellón de la Plana, while four days later, on Saturday the 7th, it will visit Ukraine (8:00 p.m.) in the Turkish town of Antalya.
