French national football team player Karim Benzema will not be excluded from the national team in the event of a possible penalty for participating in the blackmail of teammates, said the president of the French Football Association, Noel Le Gre.
“The coach is always responsible for the selection, and Benzema will not be excluded in connection with a possible court sentence. Even if he is sentenced to a suspended prison sentence, he still has the right to appeal the conviction. His call or not in the coming months will not be connected. with this case, “Le Gre said in an interview with Parisien published today.
The Real Madrid football player has been accused of complicity in an attempt to blackmail his former teammate from the French national team, Mathieu Valbuena. In 2015, Benzema allegedly pressured Valbuena to pay the blackmailers, who threatened to publish his video of sexual content.
“I will never intervene to say that we do not call him in the team. After that, it is up to (selector) Didier Deschamps to consider whether Benzema is capable of playing for the national team in terms of sports,” Le Gre added.
Benzema returned to the national team last May after a break of five years, and so far he has played 92 games and scored 33 goals.
The court in Versailles will pass a verdict on November 24.
The prosecutor requested that Benzema be fined 75,000 euros and a suspended sentence of 10 months if he is found guilty.
