Portuguese football player Cristiano Ronaldo said today that the selection can overcome the defeat by Serbia, and qualify for the World Cup in Qatar in 2022.

“Yesterday’s result is difficult, but not difficult enough to destroy us. The goal to qualify for the World Cup is still there and we know what we have to do to do it. There is no excuse,” Ronaldo wrote on his Instagram account.

The football players of Serbia defeated the selection of Portugal with 2: 1 on Sunday night in Lisbon, in the match of the last round of Group A of the qualifications for the World Cup.

With that victory, Serbia won a direct placement in the competition in Qatar, while Portugal will play a barrage in March next year.

“Football has shown us again and again that sometimes the most difficult path is the one that leads us to the desired outcome,” the Portuguese captain added.

For the Portuguese 36-year-old striker, the World Cup in 2022 could be the last in his career, after he participated four times in a row since 2006.

The Portuguese national team has played at all World Cups since 2002, since it missed all three competitions in the 1990s.
