Zhang Yimou is directing the opening ceremony of the WOG in Beijing

The opening ceremony of this year’s Winter Olympic Games in Beijing was directed by Chinese director Zhang Yimou, who also directed the spectacular opening ceremony of the Summer Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008, the Chinese Media Group (CMG) reported.

“It is a great honor for me to direct the opening ceremony for the second time. I hope that the ceremony will leave a good impression and create wonderful moments that will go down in history,” Zhang said in an interview with the Xinhua news agency.

The executive director of the Olympic Broadcasting Company, Jianis Exarcos, expressed the expectation that the grand opening of the Winter Olympics on February 4 will be as impressive and spectacular as the opening of the 2008 Summer Olympics, but completely different because it will show the current era.

“Working with Zhang in 2008 was the highlight of my personal and professional life. And this is the second highlight I never expected. Zhang is a director with a vision. Working with him is a pleasure because he understands international viewers well,” Exarcos said.

He added that the opening ceremony, directed by Zhang in 2008, changed the stereotypical way of thinking because the author “showed the essence of Chinese culture in the form of modern art, which amazed the whole world.”

The Winter Olympics will open on February 4.
