All foreign football players from Russia and Ukraine become free players

The contracts of foreign football players and coaches employed in the Russian and Ukrainian championships will be “suspended” until the end of the season and they will be able to find a new engagement, FIFA announced today.

Foreign footballers will have the right to “unilaterally suspend their employment contract” until June 2022, and they will be able to find a new engagement by April 7 at the latest.

Fifa will treat underage players fleeing Ukraine as underage refugees, thus entering an international transfer market that is usually closed to under-18s.

FIFA, which banned Russia from participating in the 2022 World Cup, reiterated its condemnation of Russia’s use of force in Ukraine and called for a “quick cessation of hostilities.”
