Beijing Paralympic Winter Games officially closed

The 13th Winter Paralympic Games were officially closed today at the National Stadium in Beijing. The Games were marked by the decision to suspend Russian and Belarusian athletes, after the military intervention in Ukraine.

The president of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), Andrew Parsons, said the participants in the Games were “peace champions”, but did not specifically mention the situation in Ukraine during the closing ceremony.

The host of the games won the most medals, 18 gold, 20 silver and 23 bronze.

Second on the list is Ukraine with 11 gold, 10 silver and eight bronze medals, while Canada is in third place with eight gold, six silver and 11 bronze medals.

About 600 athletes took part in the games in China, and they competed in skiing, cross-country, biathlon, hockey, snowboarding and curling.

The next Winter Paralympic Games will be held in 2026 in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo.
