The mayor of Paris does not rule out not inviting Russia to the 2024 Olympics

The mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo said that the invasion of Ukraine by Russian President Vladimir Putin contradicts the Olympic spirit, և the time will come to decide whether his country can participate in the 2024 Olympic Games in the French capital.

“The Olympic Games are also a geopolitical part of this planet. What is happening today does not classify Russia as a group of peaceful countries. Vladimir Putin is waging an unjust war. He violates, does not recognize international laws. “We have to take that into account,” he said in an interview with Reuters.

In late February, the executive body of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) proposed that sports federations ban Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials from participating in international tournaments. The Russian Olympic Committee had strongly disagreed. At the moment, the Russian Olympic Committee is not frozen, և Russia can participate in the 2024 Olympics, but in any case, the decision depends on the IOC.

There are such cases in history. After World War I, Germany, Austria, Bulgaria, Turkey and Hungary were not invited to participate in the 1920 Antwerp Olympics. After the Second World War, Germany and Japan did not participate in the 1948 London Olympics.

Anne Hidalgo will still be the mayor of Paris in 2024, unless, of course, she achieves a surprise victory in the upcoming French presidential elections. He is one of the 12 candidates running in the presidential elections.
