Hamburg Towers celebrate first BBL victory against Chemnitz

Finally! The curse is defeated.

Since the Towers made clear promotion to the Bundesliga in Chemnitz in 2019, they have not been able to win against the Niners. In the fourth attempt it worked for Hamburg’s basketball players: 89:85 (47:44)!

“We’re super proud,” said national player Justus Holatz (20). “Both teams never gave up.”

Coach Pedro Calles (38) praised: “First of all, I have to congratulate my players. They showed character and gave us this very important victory.”

Zach Brown (26/foot) was missing from the ailing towers, but Trevon Blueitt (27/thigh) made his comeback in sixth place in the table.

After a shaky start, a gripping, intense basketball game developed in front of 3,000 fans at eye level. As so often, the towers wobbled in the third quarter. But in the end, thanks to hard work, they won under the boards. And a strong team performance.

Center Maik Kotsar (25) was the most valuable man with 18 points and 11 rebounds. In the hot final phase, Jaylon Brown (27/18 points) also showed strong nerves on the free-throw line. Calles: “The fact that we then managed to generate stops in defense in the last two minutes gave us the win.”

The 13th win of the season was extremely important in the race for the play-offs. Previously, Hamburg had only won two of eleven games against the top eight…

“Now we have to take the self-confidence with us,” demands Hollatz.

On Friday, the Towers will go directly to the Saturday game at newly promoted Heidelberg (8:30 p.m., Magenta Sport).
