A British boxer dies by knockout

British middleweight boxer Sherif Lawal died on Sunday after collapsing in the ring during his first professional fight.

The British Boxing Council issued a note of condolence on Monday, after the fight organizers announced the boxer’s death at the age of 29.

Media reports stated that Lawal sustained an injury to his temple during the fourth round of six scheduled rounds in his fight against Portuguese Malam Varela at the Harrow Entertainment Center in London.

Warren Boxing Management, the company promoting the fight, said in a statement: “Unfortunately, Sharif collapsed during the fight, and despite the paramedics’ best efforts, he died.”

The fight was the first in an event that was decided to be cancelled.
