It’s a nice gesture from Leipzig, which is rather unusual in the Bundesliga. Before kick-off, the club always plays the respective fan anthem of the visiting club. But not on Saturday in the league duel with Union (1: 2).
The anthem was omitted entirely. Instead, the normal stadium music played before kick-off. Justification of the Leipzig: Nina Hagen’s “Eisern Union!” melodically reminds of the national anthem of Russia in a text passage.
Specifically in the section: “Victory in sight – looking far ahead! Let’s move across the nation together.”
On Wednesday in the semi-finals of the DFB Cup (2-1), RB had still played the anthem. But this time the club decided against it: because there were 600 Ukrainian refugees in the stadium at the invitation of RB. So that they don’t misunderstand the song and against the background of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, the club decided not to play the song.
By the way: At Union they know about said song passage. And sees the RB measure relaxed. When asked, the club says that RB doesn’t have to play the song….
