On the international sports scene, Russia and Belarus have already faced a sea of exclusions and quarantines as a result of the invasion of Ukraine.

Now the Latvian government has decided that it is forbidden for sports teams and individual athletes from Latvia to participate in tournaments and competitions on Russian or Belarusian soil.

The ban specifically applies to participation in national championships and cup tournaments in the two countries, while the same applies in international leagues for teams, where more than half of the participants come from Russia and Belarus.

Russia’s military aggression and invasion of Ukraine is a gross violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and it calls for important decisions including the suspension of Latvian sports teams in Russia and Belarus – especially in the national championships, spokesman Sandis Riekstins is quoted in several Latvians newspapers.

It is also forbidden to act with Russian and Belarusian sports agents.
