Cycling star Wout van Aert has not suffered any fractures after his fall at the 79th Vuelta. This was announced by his Dutch team. The Belgian had to give up due to the serious fall on the 16th stage of the Tour of Spain. It remains to be seen whether the 29-year-old will be able to compete in the World Championships in Zurich, which begin on September 22nd.
The all-rounder, who won three stages at this year’s Vuelta, suffered severe knee pain after the fall in a descent on a wet road. According to his team, this was caused by a deep wound. The injury now requires intensive treatment. Van Aert returned to Belgium to recover from the injuries he sustained in the fall.
Groves favourite on stage 17
The year is not going to the liking of the nine-time Tour de France stage winner. The team-mate of two-time Tour winner Jonas Vingegaard had a serious fall in March during the semi-classic Across Flanders and missed out on the Giro d’Italia, among other things. He did not win a stage in the 111th Tour de France, finishing in second place twice.
The current Tour of Spain was very successful for van Aert, who was wearing the green jersey of the best sprinter, until his fall. On the 17th stage, where the fast professionals should have the say at the finish, Kaden Groves is considered the favorite on Tuesday for the 141.5 kilometers between Arnuero and Santander. The Australian took over the green jersey when van Aert dropped out of the Vuelta.
