Football: Lamine Yamal’s father released from hospital after knife attack

The father of rising Spanish football star Lamine Yamal was released from hospital on Friday two days after being stabbed in his hometown of Mataró in Catalonia, according to television footage.

Antena 3’s footage shows Mounir Nasraoui surrounded by friends in the neighborhood of this city, about 30 km north of Barcelona, where Yamal grew up and where part of his family still lives.

The father of Lamine Yamal, 17, a striker for FC Barcelona who won the European Championship in July with Spain, also posted messages on social media thanking his family and the police officers who intervened after his attack. He particularly praised the officer who “sealed the wound on his chest from which the most blood was escaping.”

Suspect in pre-trial detention

Four people arrested after the attack also appeared before a judge on Friday, who kept one of the suspects in pre-trial detention and released the others under judicial supervision. The investigation was opened for injuries and attempted homicide.

Mounir Nasraoui was stabbed several times on Wednesday evening in a car park in the Rocafonda district. According to the Barcelona daily La Vanguardia, the incident occurred after an argument with men who had approached him while he was walking his dog and who had returned to attack him. He was hospitalised in a serious but stable condition.

Yamal made his debut at 15 years old at FC Barcelona in 2023 and has since established himself as one of the greatest talents in world football. His father became famous during Euro-2024, which Yamal won with Spain, thanks to his posts on social networks and media appearances.
